What is Fashion? Why Should I Care?

How fashion is a timeliness style that you create based off of your: attitude, culture, mood, age, finances, and much more. Fashion is an art form that you get to create every day.

”FASHION” is a form of self-expression at a particular period and place and in a specific context, of clothing, footwear, lifestyle, accessories, makeup, hair, and maybe even your body. The term implies a look defined only by the fashion industry as which is a ”trend”

What is fashion design or fashion merchandising? One in the same, I think not!

* Fashion Design: is the art of applying design, aesthetics, clothing construction, and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories. It is influenced by culture and different trends, and has varied over time and many places.

* Fashion Merchandising: can be defined as the planning and promotion of sales by presenting a product to the right market at the proper time, by carrying out organized, skillful advertising, using attractive displays and so much more.

The fashion industry just does not stop there, its compromise of so many jobs that may break down into those categories. With careers like: fashion designer, a fashion stylist, fashion journalist, model, creative director, a photographer and more. All of these jobs and more put together builds the fashion industry. Even the consumer/ audience, plays a huge part in this all.

Tip #1 - ”Terminology“ throw it away

The fashion world of course as millions of words and terminology that describes the things that they have created from the 1700’s to now in 2022. Learning the difference between a corset and bodice, is an example they look completely the same to the modern eye but to a fashion expert they are completely different, from the uses of the garment, the structure, and even the materials used to make it. I have learned through my 4 years in college studying fashion merchandising that the terminology is truly not needed! In this day and age fashion is constantly changing each season, with new styles being created and old styles being recycled (especially when thrifting ♻️). The terminology of things created from the 1700’s is not need fashion today you dont need terminology, instead you need uniqueness and adaptability.

Tip #2 - Tell Me More

Let’s take a second to understand an example of what I mean! For example you see your favorite celebrity or artist in a outfit, and you think to yourself ’Oh. I like that long sweater like thing, its fuzzy to, even how it hangs on her is cute“. You‘ll be surprised how many fashion majors say the same thing, lol. Instead of saying “ Oh that's a vintage Chanel duster cardigan, made out of Australian sheep fur, with draping additives”. Saying that either sounds extremely boring or they have no idea what the hell your talking about because they don't have that fashion knowledge. Another reason terminology doesn’t matter is because it changes so quickly, especially based on the time and place you are located. For example located below the hat Rihanna is wearing you may say ”omg she’s wearing a trucker hat” when in actually the name of the item is “ netback cap or feed cap”. But because terminology changes so quickly its not as useful to remember that but to at least adapt instead.

Tip #3 - Make it your own

Fashion is always what you make it regardless of terminology, location, time, or culture. There will always be numerous styles, substyles, and even fusions of multiple style. In the end its what you decided to create out of it. You can follow a template of what you see and you are inspired by. Or you can go crazy off the deep end and create something new, that's the great thing about fashion it forever changing and we are now the authors of it.

Tip #4- Out with the old in with the new

In conclusion the main point of this long dramatic post was forget the terminology and past, it’s honestly bs. Fashion is forever changing, fading, and re-emerging. Soon as you stop and try to learn about the trends, history, color story, boom within a blink of an eye its changed into something complete different, and there you are trying to relearn all over again. Fashion is style and style is forever eternal, so learn something useful about fashion and learn how to make it unique and your creation.
